AC Not Cooling on a Hot Day? Read This Before You Call
When cooling fails in a Southwest Ohio July, an upstairs bedroom can pass 90°F before evening. A few causes you can rule out from the thermostat and the filter cabinet. The rest are electrical, refrigerant or drainage faults — and two of them get worse every hour the system keeps running.

The short answer
Start with the filter, the thermostat setting and the outdoor unit — if the fan outside is not spinning while the house calls for cooling, that is the fault. Turn the system off and call if you see ice, find water around the indoor equipment, or the breaker trips more than once.
Cooling failures cluster. The first genuinely hot stretch of a Southwest Ohio summer is when every marginal capacitor and every half-blocked drain line gives up at once, which is why an air conditioner almost never quits on a mild afternoon in May. It quits at four o’clock on the hottest day of July, along with a lot of other people’s.
Two of the causes you can rule out yourself in five minutes. The rest are electrical, refrigerant or drainage faults, and two of those actively get worse the longer the system keeps running — so the useful thing to know is not just what is wrong, but whether to leave it running while you wait.
Start with the two things that are not the air conditioner
The filter. A badly clogged filter starves the indoor coil of air, the coil runs colder than it should, and eventually it freezes into a block of ice that cannot cool anything. It is the single most common cause of “my AC stopped working” that turns out not to be a repair at all. Pull it out and hold it to a light; if no light gets through, replace it.
The thermostat. Set to COOL rather than HEAT or OFF, the target below the current room temperature, and the fan on AUTO. On ON the blower runs continuously whether the outdoor unit is cooling or not, so the vents blow air that is merely room temperature — which feels like a broken air conditioner and is not one.
If both of those are fine, match what you are actually seeing.
Match the symptom
It runs, but the air isn’t cold
The blower is moving air and the thermostat is asking for cooling, but nothing cold is arriving. That points at the outdoor half of the system almost every time — a failed run capacitor, a burnt contactor, a compressor that has stopped, or a refrigerant charge that has leaked away.
Do this now: Walk outside and look at the condenser while the thermostat is calling for cooling. If the fan on top is not spinning, you have found the fault and it is electrical. Leave it alone and call — a capacitor holds a charge long after the power is off.
The air is cold, but there is hardly any of it
Restricted airflow, which is usually the filter, a failing blower motor, or ice building on the indoor coil. It is worth taking seriously rather than living with: a system starved of air runs colder than it was designed to, which is exactly how coils freeze and compressors get damaged.
Do this now: Check the filter first. Then find where the insulated refrigerant lines enter the house and feel them — if there is ice, skip ahead to the ice section below, because that is now the problem you have.
Nothing happens at all
A completely unresponsive system is usually electrical, or a safety device doing precisely what it was fitted to do. A blocked condensate drain will deliberately lock the whole system out rather than let it flood your ceiling, and a great many “dead” air conditioners are that float switch, working correctly.
Do this now: Check the breaker, and reset it once if it has tripped. If it trips again, leave it off and call — that is a fault being contained, not a nuisance. Also check the outdoor disconnect box near the condenser has not been pulled.
There is ice on the coil or the refrigerant lines
Ice is a symptom, never the fault itself. A coil only freezes because it is running colder than it should, which traces back to low airflow or low refrigerant — and thawing it does not address either, so it will simply freeze again.
Do this now: Turn cooling off at the thermostat and set the fan to ON, which helps the coil thaw. Do not chip at the ice, and do not run cooling again until somebody has looked at it. Running a compressor against an iced coil is how a repair becomes a replacement.
There is water around the indoor equipment
Cooling produces condensate and it has to drain somewhere. Water on the floor means the drain line is blocked, the pan has rusted through, or a condensate pump has stopped. The equipment is rarely the expensive part of this one — ceilings, drywall and flooring are.
Do this now: Switch the system off, mop what is there and put something under the drip. This is worth treating as urgent even though nothing is on fire, because the damage compounds quietly while you wait.
Why nobody can give you a price over the phone
“My AC is not cooling” covers a run capacitor worth a small fraction of a service call and a failed compressor that may end the conversation about repair altogether. Both produce the identical symptom from where you are standing, and no amount of describing it down a phone line separates them. A number quoted before anyone has tested the system is a guess, and guesses have a habit of growing once the panel is off.
