Your Furnace Stopped Working: What to Check Before You Call
A furnace that quits on a January night in Southwest Ohio turns into a real problem quickly. Some of what causes it you can rule out yourself in ten minutes — and some of it you should not touch at all. Here is how to tell which is which.

The short answer
Check the thermostat, the breaker, the furnace switch, the access panel and the filter first — together they account for a large share of no-heat calls and cost you nothing. If you smell burning, hear banging or scraping, see damage, or the breaker keeps tripping, stop and call instead.
A furnace that will not run is one of the few home failures that comes with a genuinely useful do-it-yourself checklist. A fair share of the no-heat calls we take in Hamilton and across Butler County turn out to be a thermostat on the wrong setting, a switch someone knocked, a breaker that tripped, or a filter that has not been changed since spring. None of those needs a technician, and all of them can be ruled out in about ten minutes.
The other share are electrical faults, ignition faults, cracked heat exchangers and failed control boards, and those are not homeowner territory at all. So the useful version of this article is not a list of everything that can go wrong with a furnace — it is a clear line between the checks that are safe to make and the point where you should stop making them.
Before you touch anything
One category of problem overrides everything else on this page, and it is worth reading before you go anywhere near the equipment.
That is not a hedge or a disclaimer. Natural gas and carbon monoxide are the two things a furnace can produce that a checklist cannot help you with, and the correct response to either is to be outside before you make any phone call. Everything below assumes none of that applies.
Six checks, in the order a technician makes them
This order is not arbitrary. It runs from the most common and cheapest to rule out down to the most informative, which is roughly how a technician works through a cold house — nobody starts by pulling a burner assembly when the fan setting has not been looked at.

The thermostat, and not just the temperature
Check it is set to HEAT rather than COOL or OFF, and that the target is at least a few degrees above what the room actually is. Then check the fan: on ON it runs continuously and pushes room-temperature air through the vents whether the burner is lit or not, which is far and away the most common reason a working furnace gets reported as “blowing cold”. It should be on AUTO. If the display is blank or dim, change the batteries.

The switch on the wall beside the furnace
There is a service switch near almost every furnace, and it looks exactly like an ordinary light switch — often at the top of the basement stairs, sometimes on the side of the cabinet itself. It gets flipped by accident more often than you would think, usually by someone carrying something down the stairs. It should be on.

The breaker — once, and only once
Find the breaker for the furnace or air handler and look at it properly; a tripped breaker often sits fractionally off center rather than obviously in the off position. If it has tripped, push it fully off and then on again. If it trips a second time, stop there and leave it off. It is protecting the circuit from a real fault, and repeatedly resetting it is one of the few things on this list that carries a genuine fire risk.

The front panel, pushed fully shut
Every modern furnace has a door safety switch that cuts power the moment the blower panel is not properly seated. A furnace that is completely dead immediately after someone changed a filter is very often this and nothing else. Press the panel firmly home and listen for the switch.

The filter
Pull it out and hold it up to a light. If you cannot see light through it, it is restricting airflow badly enough to make the furnace overheat, at which point a safety limit shuts the burner down — which presents as no heat, or as a furnace that runs for a few minutes and then stops. A filter is a few dollars and takes a minute to swap.

The small window on the front
Most furnaces have an LED behind a little sight glass that flashes a diagnostic code, and the legend explaining the codes is usually printed on the inside of the door panel you just closed. Counting the flashes takes ten seconds, and it tells whoever comes out more about the fault than any description you could give over the phone.
The four signs that mean stop and call
If any of these is happening, the checklist is over. Turn the system off at the thermostat and leave it off — continuing to run a furnace that is doing one of these things reliably turns a repair into a bigger repair.
A burning smell that does not clear. A brief dusty smell the first time you run heat for the season is normal — that is dust burning off the heat exchanger, and it should be gone within an hour. A smell that persists, or one that is acrid, electrical or like hot plastic, is not.
A bang or boom when it lights. That is gas accumulating before it ignites, and it gets worse rather than better. Metal scraping on metal is the other noise worth stopping for; it usually means a blower problem.
A breaker that trips twice. Covered above, and worth repeating because it is the one people talk themselves out of.
Water pooling around the base, or visible scorching or rust on the cabinet or the flue. Both mean something has been going wrong for a while.
If you have a heat pump, cool air may not be a fault at all
Plenty of homes around Hamilton, Fairfield and West Chester run heat pumps rather than gas furnaces, and heat pumps get reported as broken constantly when they are working exactly as designed. The reason is simple physics: a gas furnace delivers air at something like 120–140°F, while a heat pump delivers it at roughly 85–95°F. That is comfortably above room temperature and comfortably below your skin temperature, so it feels cool on your hand even while it is heating the house perfectly well.
The second thing heat pumps do that alarms people is defrost. In freezing weather the outdoor unit periodically reverses itself to melt ice off its coil. For a few minutes the outdoor unit steams like something is badly wrong, and the air indoors goes briefly cool. That is normal and it ends on its own.
What happens when the checklist runs out
If you have been through all six and the house is still cold, the fault is somewhere the list cannot reach — ignition, flame sensing, the gas valve, the inducer, a limit switch, the control board or the heat exchanger. That is the point to stop and let somebody test it properly rather than replace parts and hope.
